Old Gallifreyans Never Die....
Jun. 24th, 2003 10:56 pm..They just regenerate.
I realized recently that there's a TV show I dearly miss - Doctor Who.
There aren't that many Who fans out there these days. Most folks have far more discriminating tastes. They've gotten used to Star Trek: The Next Generation, Babylon 5, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Farscape, and the like. Most modern fans wouldn't like the cheap BBC special effects, the episodic structure, the low levels of plot and character development, the frequently laughable scripts. I understand that for most folks, there's lots better shows on. Doctor Who would bore them to tears.
But I love the darned thing. I love a quirky, charming, quick-witted, frequently inscrutable main character dressed in outlandish clothes, followed by folks trying to muddle thought galactic and temporal adventures. I want my TARDIS, with time travel unburdened by folks screaming "paradox!". I want my sonic screwdrivers, and my K-9 robots.
The original show was... "pulpy". But today, we require sophistication. Pulp is yesterday's news, not today's hot show. I recognize that my disbelief has an off-road suspension, and that I'll tolerate shows that make others cringe, and I'm not really upset at the world for moving on to other styles of storytelling on TV...
But if people can have their Care Bears, and My Little Ponies, and new Transformers movies... Maybe, just maybe, I'll see more Doctor Who someday.
Don't laugh at me! Everybody needs a dream.
