Grabbing up the old idea net...
Aug. 2nd, 2004 12:27 pmOkay, I'm a geek. A big geek. A big geek lucky enough to have found a lovely (and somewhat geeky) Lady interested in marrying me. So, there's going to be a wedding.
As part of that whole rigmarole, I've got my half of the wedding party, who I refer to as my Groom's Goons. These gents are my good friends, and I want to thank them for standing by me in this. So, I'm on the search for Goon's Gifts.
I want to give them something lasting - gifts that are perishable or that get used up seem... inauspicious for a wedding, and won't be around later as a remembrance. I'd like it to be something that, when they see it, who it came from will pop to mind. So, it probably ought to be a bit geeky. And these guys deserve a bit more thought and effort and originality than a standard pen and pencil set, or plain engraved money clip.
Finding such a thing isn't as easy as it sounds. While they are my friends, none of them are really die-hard geeks themselves. Sure, they occasionally read sci-fi, and like the popular genre movies, and they've all at least tried a hand at RPGs. But they aren't a bunch of hardcore fen/tech-junkies. I found myself stuck in a bit of a rut of thought in looking for gifts.
Being a brainy monkey, I realized that while these guys deserve decent thought on the subject, it doesn't need to be my own personal thought. Using a network to search out ideas counts as effort on my part. I asked my Lady if she had ideas, and she gave me a splendid one. Which led me to wonder what other ideas I could dredge up if I ask around.
So, you're looking for slightly geeky Groom's Goons Gifts. Where do you look, and what do you go for?
