Dear Mrs. McCain,

When the country is in the middle of a housing crisis, and many of the registered voters are worried about keeping or ever being able to afford a home, wearing an outfit that could itself pay for a home is gauche.

Vanity Fair: Cindy McCain's $300,000 Outfit

Really, if you're going to pay that much for an outfit, couldn't you have at least had one that looked good? Wearing $300K of ugly does not make voters like your husband...

To be fair, the dress is about the same price as the other dress in the picture... its hard to tell if the earrings, which make up the majority of that figure are gauche looking... I guess the real question is... is it more appropriate for her not to wear jewelery she owns? In this case I feel that the Vanity Fair article posted that figure in order to get a rise out of people.. and granted, they shouldn't be waving the "I'm not an elistist flag." On the other hand, I have some pretty valuable jewelery (although not on that scale) that I inherited and I'll be damned if I'm not going to wear it. I wouldn't wear it to a homeless shelter... but still..

I heard that it was $300K, but only if the jewelry was real. I didn't hear what it would have been if the jewelry was fake.

Well, you get to the point there - you wouldn't wear it to a homeless shelter. You don't flaunt wealth in front of those who don't have it if you want them to like you. Her accessories are worth more than the entire net worth of most families!

The economy and the housing crisis are major issues this election year. What does wearing a pair of earrings worth three college educations say to those who don't know how they'll send their kids to college?

Appearances matter, even fake ones - I don't mind a few grand being spent to make a world leader look good. The president should wear an expensive suit. But there's a difference between showing solid prosperity and ostentatious display of wealth.

Sure... but if Vanity Fair hadn't written an article about it... would anyone watching that on tv even know?

Yeah, that seemed like extremely poor judgment and lack of empathy. Though I suppose that shouldn't surprise us.
