And I Thought I Was Too Cynical

Okay, so, The Shrub has put some ideas on the table about space exploration. Bug stuff about going to the Moon and Mars. Skeptics wonder why - my own first thought is that it's mostly to get some space-junkies to vote for him in November.

But, given some of the policy decisions of the current administration, one is tempted to ask, "What does Halliburton get out of it? Drilling rights?"

Unfortunately, that may not be far from the truth...

Ooof! I hadn't seen that!

Sending the equipment to begin drilling a 100 meter hole in 2007 is a pretty tall order. I can't easily imagine how it could be done without twenty times the payload launched for the current rovers, plus it would have to be put together in three years. I'm not sure we have a booster that could launch it. Perhaps a pair of Titan IV [6 tons to geosynchronous orbit] could do it, which of course would benefit Shrub's buddies at Lockheed-Martin.
