Not Exactly My Best Work

Hm. Lunchtime. What would sit well today? Aha! Egg salad would make a fine lunch!

Trot down to the kitchen, put a couple of eggs into a pot of cold water. Light the burner, and go hang out about the house for a few minutes for them to come to a boil...

...smoke? Why do I smell smoke? How much time has passed?!?!

I am one of the few people I know who can manage to burn a hard-boiled egg. Charred, actually. I am a moron. If they gave licenses for home cooking, mine would be revoked. It isn't like this is the first time I've ever done this, either. Please pardon me while I go bang my head against the wall...

...and what the heck will I have for lunch? Can I possibly mess up peanut butter?

I'm not going to suggest how you could screw up peanut butter, lest you think it's an assignment. Let's just say that the first time I used dried chilis in something, I didn't get the right order of magnitude.

But I've discovered that kitchen timers are my friends. Elizabeth doesn't understand why I set a timer when the bread machine starts (we pull the dough hook out at the end of kneading), because she'll pay attention when the kneading stops. I won't. I could be standing right next to the thing and completely miss it. So I set a timer, and when it bugs me, I figure out what I need to do.

This reminds me *so* much of my high school Home Ec class. The recipe for pizza called for "a liberal shake" of garlic powder. I suspect that the resulting dead taste buds affected me for life...

So what would have happened had the directions called for "a libertarian shake"? ;-)

Wow. And I thought *my* hard-boiled egg story was bad...

*grin* I've not burned food ont eh stove, but I once burned one of those heat-pack things . . . ruined a pot, too!

Pity you caught it so soon - they explode. Explosions are cool.

Actually, I caught it after the explosion had occured. Or at least, so I gather from the blackened shards of egg in the pot.

My only solace is that I've done this in the very same pot before. I know that with enough effort I can save the pot. Thank the gods for enamel.

You're in fine company

I've done this too.

Within the past three weeks.

I definitely recommend a kitchen timer... or a digital watch timer...
