From today's Sci Fi Wire, an update on Gnomeo and Juliet.

Gnomeo and Juliet? Yes, as you feared, it's the Elton John musical version of the Shakespeare romance, done in the world of garden gnomes. I kid you not.

In the article, Elton John is quoted as saying, "Gnomeo is an edgy concept, and Miramax is the perfect home to push the envelope in animation."

Gnomes are edgy?!? What, are their little peaked felt hats serrated, or something?

Remember, this is Elton John's definition of edgy. :-)

You should definitely ask [livejournal.com profile] divalion about garden gnomes. She has refugee gnomes living in her attic. Given the recent furor over immigration... if that's not cutting edge, I don't know what is!

Somewhere out there are undestroyed, illegal copies of a movie made in the late 1980s (maybe 1990) called Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story. All the characters were represented by Barbie/Ken/that line of dolls. Anorexia was represented by someone scraping layers away from a Barbie while blowtorching it. The Washington Post dubbed it one of the best filmes of its year.

It was 1987. I saw Superstar at an independent film festival in early spring of 1988. It was brilliant -- I don't remember any of the other films I saw that night, but this one stayed with me for an embarrassingly long time.

Well...despite their general cheerfulness, gnomes can get kinda edgy...say, if they're being hunted by a killer android, or if their orcish buddy is mightily plastered and feeling amorous.

But in the "dangerously trendy" sense? Erm...not so sure about that one.

Especially for garden gnomes.
