After several years in development, the Espresso - a $50,000 vending machine with a conceivably infinite library - is nearly consumer-ready and will debut in ten to 25 libraries and bookstores in 2007. The New York Public Library is scheduled to receive its machine in February.

Date: 2006-12-21 10:19 pm (UTC)I was just thinking the other day that I'd heard a story a few years back about these sort of machines being invented, but hadn't heard anything since. I was wondering if they were still in development or had been either abandoned or had the idea bought up and locked away.
They sound like the perfect vehicle for print on demand, smaller authors or older less in demand works. I really hope they catch on.
