Valentine's Day Sucks

But not in the way you'd normally expect me to mean that.

Actually, it is still too early tell if it is going to really suck, but it'll suck. Or at least the shiny new shop vac will suck. Or, I hope it does, 'cause it seems the best way to get the water out of the basement.

Today we have been introduced to this particular joy of home ownership. We had some hefty rains in the autumn, so while there were signs that there had been water in the basement at some time in the past, I expected that it required some fairly specific circumstances. I think the frozen-ground and heavy rain combination might be it. Which, happily, might mean it is preventable in the future - it may mean I need to extend some gutter spouts, and double check the grading at the foundation outside the wet area of the basement.

And, of course, this will give us some impetus to get rid of some of the crap that we put down in the basement when we moved. Crap that we don't need, but might like to have, is easy to justify holding on to. That same crap, soglified, is less attractive.

Anyway, off to suckage.

I thought I remembered putting stuff in the basement on pallets when we helped you move. Were there not enough pallets, or was the water too deep?

You remember correctly. But, as you surmise, there were not enough pallets. And, in terms of action items, this was low on the list. We were, for the most part, intelligent about our item placement, however, so the damage is limited.

And, thankfully, the amount of water seems to have been limited too. I've gotten about everything that the shop-vac and get already, so now it is fans and dehumidifier time.

Welcome to the only-sometimes-landed gentry :-)

I am lucky - there was not nearly as much water as I had feared. It seems that my lady had the unfortunately luck of stepping precisely in the one deep spot this morning. Overall, it seems to have been approximately 75 gallons of water on the floor. A mess, but nothing a shop-vac and I couldn't handle.

And, at least the water was clean. My current suspect is seepage up through some cracks in the floor slab.

Yuck! Sorry you had to deal with that, glad the damage wasn't too extensive.
