Unexpected Perqs

I finally decided that sitting at my desk at work, hunched over my laptop (one person claimed the image is rather like a giant trying to read a tiny picture book) was less than optimal. So, I asked if I could order a full monitor, and was given the okay.

I looked through the choices available, and eventually picked a 20" Dell (not the cheapest, but I've had good experience with Dell flat panel monitors before), and submitted my request to the guy who handles the financial end of things and ordering.

He came back to me, saying he could not find it on our special Dell ordering page. I realized why, as it was listed down in the "Accessories" section. I told him where to find it, and he looked me a little funny, and said, basically, "I can order something that small, if you want it, but the one listed up in the monitors section is the one I'm usually getting for people now."

So, there's this monster of a widescreen flat panel LCD monitor on my desk now. This thing is huge - 24" viewable on the diagonal (as compared to the 15" of the laptop). I guess the Institute does not have any qualms with buying quality hardware, because I sure as heck know I couldn't afford to shell out for this thing at home. I can't say I mind, beign the recipient of their forward-thinking policy.

How pleased I am with the new toy also goes a long way in showing that I really am a simple animal.

Not to denigrate their largess -- but a 24" Dell widescreen is only ~$380 for the cheap version. :)

A quick web search indicates to me that the model in question typically retails for $500+

And, you have to remember, this is from a guy who has never in his life paid more than $400 for a computer. This, to me, seems an extravagance.

Mm, okay, then you got the one I have. ;) Two of. :) (Work helped pay for both...)

I suppose have different standards...I buy Macs, after all.

We're friends because you know how to spell "perq." :D

Hmm. I should consider the same. Not just because hunching is starting to hurt a little, but also because a max resolution of 1280x800 is adversely affecting my productivity.
